Trust: A Devotional On Kindness and Goodness

While on instagram the other night, I came across a video of a father and daughter. He had her stand on top of the kitchen table with her back turned towards him as he coached her on how to complete a trust fall. She was about four or five years old and initially, she stood there either frozen or with her head turned to the side or backwards towards him. Throughout the video, her dad remained stern in his instruction, but with kindness in his voice as he coached her to trust him, but throughout the entire video, he never stopped smiling and laughing. Despite her saying, “No!” he was in her ear, continually cheering her on, guiding her, and repositioning her little body to look forward, until finally, she gained enough courage in her trust in him to fall back.
Y’all, it was THE cutest thing! He was so proud and she was relieved that she was protected by her father as she did what he instructed her to do. As I was watching the video, I couldn’t help but think to myself - “little girl, do you not know who your father is?” Like, he would have never let you fall… He was this fitness guy, standing 6’4 at least, towering over her as she stood on the table.
But, I was quickly reminded that as a child of God, I too, at times have shared the same hesitations similar to the girl; when it comes to my trust in the Lord and moving forward into what I’m being led to do. You know those moments, when God asks us to do something and we hesitate, or look back at the past and consider standing there because it seems more comfortable? That’s been me, I'm speaking directly to myself. Let’s keep it real, like the little girl in the video couldn’t see what was behind her; just as we can’t see places we have been called, but have not been before…
I love God’s word as it says that his goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our life. How amazing? He would never lead us down a path that does not produce life. No matter where He leads us, he is good. And, His goodness is not contingent on our circumstance.
What gives me continued trust in God is recounting all that I have to be grateful for as well as remembering His hand in my life and in the lives of others thus far.
As we continue forward, let’s ask the Holy Spirit to continue to reveal to us His kindness and goodness. There’s an abundance of it available and set-out before you. And as we step into the Holidays, be encouraged to pour that out to all those we encounter.
Let’s live this thing!
With Love,
