One of my earliest childhood memories as a little girl was standing in a ring in the middle of the living room floor, of my parent’s home, alongside my two brothers, screaming with our fist raised, “I AM SOMEBODY”; these words were given to us by our father who stood at a close distance nodding his head with approval and a grin on his face. I can only assume, those were the words that he encouraged us to recite, because there was something about his journey, some truths, some revelation that he had walked through up, into his 30’s finding it significant to teach his children how to encourage and declare affirmations over one’s self. That was his way of leading us and letting us know that we mattered, had a voice, were important and accepted.

As a little girl, the words felt right; they felt empowering, comforting and true. As an adult woman I would later learn two more things from that memory. One, what a great example of my earthly father leading me as my heavenly Father does. And two, I would find there was more to discover within this lesson than just an affirmation.

As life moved forward from childhood into adulthood, those very words were challenged through experiences, relationships, and circumstances. They were wrapped up in unhealed traumas, rejection and failed expectations. The rhythms of life would lead me into a struggle with my identity that I didn’t even notice was happening. A season or two where’d I’d find myself searching for love in allllll the wrong places. Until my encounter with God: Kind of like the woman at the well - (John 4:4-26). In a desperate, exhausted situation filled with suppressed anger and pain, He met me. What I was desperate for was with and pursuing me all along.

In my early twenties, after rededicating my life to God, a shift happened. As I began to surrender I started to realize that my identity was not in the world. There was this discomfort, because I was trying to make sense of why some of my experiences didn’t match the truth of God’s Word and what it said about me, what it says about children of God. I later realized that my mind was not quite renewed - (Romans 12:2).

Little by little, I allowed God to take me on the journey of healing and he began to shed light over my past which included Him revealing lies and generational curses- simply put, sin. He showed me the root causes of past pain. This journey was also met with God leading me in forgiveness. Learning even now, that as believers, this journey with Him is ongoing. Especially in regards to the refining that happens within relationships and community with others.

He revealed my identity and that I wasn’t defined by past decisions or what man says, whether that be family, friends, social media or culture. Whether approved or rejected. My identity was in Christ alone and as believers, we’ve heard it before but allow this to be a reminder that we are called to guard our hearts - (Proverbs 4:23, John 8:36).

There will be situations where the enemy will attempt to counter-attack what God says in the form of distorted memories, accusations and distractions - (John 10:10, Ephesians 6:11).

Daily, it is required of us to make a choice to trust God and remain deeply rooted in who He says that we are. Invite God into the depths of your hearts and into this journey with you, there is so much that He wants to show you and do through you. You are who He says that you are. “You are Somebody.”

Each day I am led & have to make the decision to speak these affirmations over myself and declare what God says about me. I pray that it encourages you and I invite you to join me in doing so!

With Love,

Chalssie
