Hey Ya’ll...Happy New Year! I know that we are 10 days into the new year, but this is the very first post on the lifestyle corner this year and I am ready to get it on and poppin!
How does that saying go?, “new year, new me, who this...?” We all know that’s not quite how it works. Not this girl, anyway! Although the word NEW is speaking to my whole spirit these days, I would be so blind if I didn’t recognize that each year that comes and goes represents building blocks relative to my journey.
There is always something new learned from the previous year that I utilize in order to continue forward in ways that produce life. Living a healthy lifestyle requires insight, active participation, intentionality and resilience! Things in our life don’t simply produce through osmosis; we have to be involved.
I noticed that over the span of 2018 and up until now that I’ve become more and more attracted to living a life of minimalism. Living a lean lifestyle and ridding my environment of waste—requires identifying and differentiating between things, within my life, that slow me down versus things that are are productive & life-giving.
During the month of December, right at the end of 2018, I took on the task of tackling a dear friend of mine, Konae's closet, (which was quite therapeutic for me I might add). She trusted and gave me full reign to do whatever I wanted as far as tossing and reorganizing! And I went to WERK! While at her home, we talked about life and areas within our own lives that need to be re-evaluated—some of the topics that came up were: fitness, food, health and social media... It was honestly the perfect time to reflect. So... my challenge to you & myself is that periodically, especially during those times when we find ourselves cleaning up physically in our every day life, we reflect and take steps toward lifestyle “cleaning” as well...Mmm, that’s a BIG challenge. But, I’m also confident that good will come from it.
Okay... Back to the closet tips. Let me start by saying that there are soo many different ways to clean your closet, and many ways that work... These particular steps work well for those of us who are doing a revamp & deep clean! Here we go...
6 Steps to Cleaning Your Closet!
1. Remove ALL clothes off your closet racks! Why? You need a clean slate to work with! Think of your bare closet; racks and shelves, as a clean canvas.
2. Take an inventory of all of the pieces of clothing that you have and remove all clothing that you don’t LOVE. That’s right, I didn’t say like.. I said LOVE. If you haven’t worn it in a while, and by a while I’m talking 9-12 months, you know, that one knitted sweater with the tread hanging from it that you haven’t worn in years or that dress that you wore to your High School Formal 10 years ago... Sis..Brah. LET THOSE CLOTHES GO!
Also, remove clothing with holes and stains. Fun Fact: It’s said that we only wear 20% of the clothing we own! PURGE IT!
3. Begin hanging your clothes back in your closet, & COLOR coordinate! This makes it easier for you to visualize the pieces that you have.
4. If you have a bottom and top rack ensure your tops including T-shirts, Blouses, Sweaters, Dresses & Coats are all hung on the top racks. All bottom racks should hold pants and skirts. If you stick with this organizational system it will make life SO SIMPLE for you to choose your outfits as you start your day!
5. Complete one final evaluation. When all of your clothes are against each other, color coordinating them may make it clearer as to what needs to be removed.
6. Go through all the clothes that you have taken from your closet & donate gently used items! I challenge you to give these items to someone who you may know who is in need or donate them to an organization.
That’s all! You are done!!
I hope that this post was helpful! AND I encourage you to take an inventory of your entire life and consider any weight that may be holding you back & let it go! You’ve got this! We’ve got this!
